It was exactly 15 minutes before 9 p.m. when the plane touched the runway of Juan Santamaria International Airport. Jack, my other companion, got our baggage while I grabbed my phone and dialled Martin’s number in a jiffy. I had to put my excitement for a good back massage on hold and make sure that my friend was doing ok. I owed him that, at the very least.

As it turned out, Martin’s passport had a small tear, which resulted from his mishandling. (I gave him a good bawling out upon hearing this) I have to admit that I was a bit scared when he was brought to a secluded room but he assured me that the airport personnel in Houston just had to make sure that his passport will be accepted in San Jose. Apparently, Continental Airlines will get fined if they allow a person to fly with a damaged passport.

Needless to say, Martin learned his lesson- the hard way! He now has to wait till the next morning to apply for a new passport and head back to San Diego while Jack and I have all the fun. Too bad!

For everyone’s benefit though, Martin shared with me the things you have to have and do to obtain a travel passport! Everything begins in the passport department. Be sure you appear there early as you are sure to be greeted by a long queue if you get there late. Come armed with two forms of Ids, a passport picture, and your birth certificate. Remember to bring cash for you may need to pay for some fees. And once you secure yourself of your passport, make sure to handle it with utmost care.

So by the next time I travel to Costa Rica, you can tag along too!
