I bet you only get to do three things with Costa Rican waters- you swim in it, surf on it or you drink it (the potable kind). If you’re up for doing something more than the usual, I highly recommend sports fishing! And why not? Costa Rica is sandwiched by two huge bodies of water, the North Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, both teeming with fish of different colors and sizes. A true fishing oasis!

Now, every sane fisherman should know not to allow sheer excitement get the better of him. Don’t just immediately jump into a boat and sail away to the middle of the sea devoid of the basic fishing know-how! And no, you don’t have to enroll yourself in some fishing school simply to ready yourself for this fun activity.

Remember, don’t over pack! If you don’t want your boat to capsize, bring just the basic things you need and make sure they’d all fit in a sturdy sports bag. Sun glasses, preferably polarized, will lessen the sun’s glare reflecting off the water so don’t leave without it. A hat is also a good idea especially if the hair on your pate is thinning! But if you really want to protect yourself from the killing heat of the sun, nothing beats a good and dependable sunblock. Costa Rica may be in the equator, which explains the hot climate but don’t be fooled. It also has its own share of rain that pours when you least expect it, so have a light rain jacket in tow. It would be wise to bring your Dramamine with you just in case you get sea sick. Believe me, no matter how big a fish you get, your story about it will play second fiddle to the story about you throwing up! And lastly, don’t forget to bring a handy camera! Aside from the breath-taking view, make sure you take snap shots of yourself catching a big fish. The non-believers will surely have a hard time discounting your feat if you have a pic to support it. And for sure, you and your catch will be the talk of the town! If you don’t puke, that is.

In the next few days, I will show you guys an in-depth look on where to go, how to get there and how much you need to bring when you fancy a few hours of sports fishing.
