You’re into fishing, you say? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Costa Rica is home to many species of pescado (fish). Some of them might even be unique in North America. There is much to know about the fish life here. And there’s always something great to go fishing for when you visit Costa Rica. Here’s one fish you’d want to try to catch!

In Lake Arenal, a fish considers a man-made 35km long lake its home. Guapote (rainbow bass) are heavy 5- to 6- pound fish that’s a wonderful yet difficult catch. Though they may appear related to the bass, they are caught the same way using casting, flipping plugs or spinner bait. But unless you’re used to hard-hitting fishing, leave this one to the pro’s. You can, however, arrange boat tours with nearby hotels and tour operators.

For much easier catch, trout can be found near the Cerro de la Muerte. It is a few distances away the Pan-American Highway leading south from San Jose. Though the fish is smaller compared to the bass in Lake Arenal, the streams are stocked with it. Also, an added bonus is the wonderful scenery makes fishing here worthwhile.
