Arenal Volcano Erupts…Strange New Creatures found in Costa Rica!!

By BobbyRica | September 11, 2009

I just so happened to be not too far from the recent Arenal Volcano eruption.  I was lucky enough to survive without too much damage to my lungs, or burnt skin…Here are a couple pictures….

The beginning of the end?

Well I survived the initial blast, although at night it got pretty hairy…heat…smoke…ash…I could feel as though it could be the end any minute.  I was lucky to find shelter in a hidden cavern which took me deep into the northern side of Arenal.

I walked about 45 minutes through dark tunnels barely high enough for me to get through bent over.  But then I saw a light at one end…I went towards the light and it opened up to an amazing small valley.  Untouched and virgin to humans.

The air was amazing, fresh and crisp.  Everything looked alive here…the lush greens, colors of the flowers, and small frog like creatures everywhere…

I took a few pictures of these amazing new animals.  Unfortunately on my way out, after tasting delicious strange looking fruit, and drinking from a pool of the most crysal clear water I have ever seen, my camera ended up getting taken from me by a large, hairy, bear-treesloth looking creature.

Deep in the caverns...

I came out and did some research, and found that the artist Jan Oliehoek actually has some pictures of the animals I saw…after explaining the tunnel and oasis to him, he agreed to show me the pictuers he took….I share these new animals with you all now, courtesy of Jan Oliehoek.
