If by chance, you run out of ideas on where to go or what to do in Costa Rica, there’s nothing wrong with heading back to the surf for some waves to conquer. Why wouldn’t you be? Surfing is the one sport that pumps up the most adrenalin to your brain, making you feel like you are king and the sea is at your command. I had already posted an article about the explosive thrills you’d get from Costa Rican surfing. So now as we finish our remaining days in featuring Costa Rica, I will let you in on the country’s finest surf spots, how to get there, what to expect and how much to shell out.

All of the surfing packages that I will mention includes a rental of a Hyundai Tucson 4×4 (with mandatory insurance and unlimited mileage) to smoothen your transition from one location to the next. Soon after you depart from your plane, the Tucson 4×4 is ready to take you wherever you please. How’s that for convenience?

Our first stop is in the remote location of Tamarindo. It’s a fairly smooth drive up north and west from the starting point in San Jose, Costa Rica. Don’t worry because road signs are everywhere to guide you where you need to go. Tamarindo boasts of two very well-known surfing sites, Witches Rock and Ollie’s Point, although other surf spots like Playa Grande, Rivermouth and Old’s Man are nothing short of spectacular too.

I would advise you to arrive in Tamarindo late afternoon. That way, you’d have a good head start for tomorrow’s surfing. Plus, you can grab a drink at the bar, relax a bit and maybe even watch the sunset. You can stay at the Tamarindo Diria, with all the amenities to suit your needs. The next day, inquire about their 1- to 2-day trip to “Boat Trip to Witches Rock & Ollie’s Point” adventure tour for easy access to waves. ($1087 per person based on double occupancy, 8 days/7 nights. Contact No: 888-751-0135)

Next jump is in one of the most popular destinations in Costa Rica for surfing, the Jaco and Hermosa Playas. These two playas are the definitive surf mecca of the Central Pacific coast. The source of their pride is the numerous surf breaks that will whet your surfing appetite for a lengthy period of time.

To get there, take your rented Tucson for a 2-hour drive to the Jaco Hermosa area. The surf sites here include Boca Barranca, Puerto Caldera, Playa Jaco, and Playa Hermosa. You can stay at the Terraza del Pacifico for a blissful sojourn paired up with party vibe and ambience. If you get tired of surfing (like that’s going to happen), you can simply schlep back to the Terraza Hotel and be pampered at their spa. You’d feel rejuvenated by then. ($687 USD per person based on double occupancy, 8 days/7 nights. Contact No: (506) 280-7328)
