Panama City can be the starting point of your tour around the country. In itself, it is a fascinating destination that helps you segue from your own life in the States to the sights of rural Panama. Panama City is a cosmopolitan city with Spanish colonial ruins, unique museums, spacious parks, and a breathtaking skyline. It houses a collection of hotels, restaurants, convention centers and financial institutions. It also is one of the centers of Hispanic culture in Central America. All this cements Panama’s claim as the “country of abundance”.

Getting to Panama City is easy. There are international flights from Europe and the US that will land at the Tocumen Airport, the country’s flag carrier. Right outside the airport are available cabs that will transport you to the country’s interior along the Pan-American Highway. Should you wish to embark on a cruise right away, they have boats that can be chartered for a fee.

If you’re a history nut, better start your journey two miles down the center of Panama City. You can find the original capital, known as Old Panama or Panama La Vieja. Save for the people who live here, everything looks like an antique and everything is expertly preserved. It’s like being transported to a time you only read in history books and old movies. The rows of houses in Casco Viejo have that wonderful Old World charm that have a refreshing effect on you. The faded remains of ornate walls and arches stand in an open park, recalling the splendor of the Spaniard’s first settlement on the Pacific Ocean. The most towering presence belongs to the cathedral, with a gigantic belfry, and the Bishop’s House. Fronting the ruins is every artisan’s dream destination, a market full of native crafts that truly reflects Panama’s rich history.

You might be surprised that Panama City also has its share of towering skyscrapers, which can be seen from the Pacific Ocean. A busy center of trade and industry, Panama City plays host to about 120 financial establishments and are linked to countless shops selling top-of-the-line merchandise. It is a true haven for people who have an appetite for shopping, shopping and more shopping. Owing to low import duties in large volume, your dollar goes a long way where the prices of goods are ridiculously low. You are even expected to do a little haggling. Two of its most prominent shopping districts are Via Espana and the Avenida Central and that’s 20 blocks of pure, non-stop shopping!

Millions of globetrotters have visited Panama City. So it is no stranger to various culinary temperaments. The city offers cuisine that can satisfy appetites that range from those with discriminating palates to frugal tourists. Hotel accommodations are worthy of one’s commendation, too. Whether you’re pennypinching or not, the city has hostels and inns are well-suited your budget. A number of its hotels also offer light gambling in casinos- a favorite amongst tourists. If you still wish to stretch the evening, Panama City is famed for its lively nightlife. Night clubs, discotheques and shows are easy to find downtown (or better yet, check the local newspaper). You simply won’t run out of things to do in this city, day in and out.
