The Telephone Service In Panama

Even though I would recommend you bring your own cellphone with the roaming features on, sometimes you might need to use a landline to contact people in and out of Panama. When you need to contact any Panamanian establishment from the States, dial”507″ first. That’s the country code. However, do not include that number when making LOCAL calls while you’re in Panama.

With regards to pay phones, they usually turn up in the most unlikeliest places. It’s like their dirty little secret here. It could be in the middle of nowhere. There’s even one in an island beach. Go figure!

But thankfully, using the phones aren’t that complicated as instructions on using them are in English and in other foreign languages. The only thing is, well just like everywhere else, finding a working pay phone can be a chore. You also need to buy prepaid calling cards called the Tarjetas Telechip. You can buy them at most stores and in various denominations. Just look for the Telechip logo with the sign De Venta Aqui.

As of this writing, calls within the country cost 20 cents for the first three minutes.
