My senses were still reeling from the horrible discovery we made at Boca Brava. We had run into a giant beast that looked like it had escaped from the depths of hell.
Fearful for our lives, we sought refuge at the other side of the island. It was my intention to bring the blonde Hollywood producer and her film crew back to the safety of Boca Chica. I remembered leaving a boat there during one of my visits to the beautiful island resort of Cala Mia. With luck, the boat would still be there at the dock and would ferry us to safety. If not, then we were doomed to spend the little time we had with a ravenous beast that appeared hungry for human flesh.
However, while formulating my plan at the small clearing where we stopped to rest, I was disturbed by a high-pitched scream that came from the bushes. Before we could see who or what it was, I uttered the only word that came to mind: “Run!”
My companions didn’t think twice and joined me in my mad rush to escape this dreadful island. We had heard that scream before as it emanated from the belly of the huge beast. A scream so powerful and horrifying that would probably make Lucifer’s voice sound like a sweet sonata.
The sexy film producer stumbled several times while running and I had to stop to pick her up. We had already left Gary the cinematographer earlier. The last time we saw him, he was bravely taking pictures of the creature, seemingly unmindful of what it could to him. His fate was unknown at this time and I didn’t want to take chances. I swore never to leave anyone else behind at the mercy of the monster.
By now, we had reached the south side of the island. But to my surprise, the boat I left behind during my early excursions to this place was gone. It was nowhere to be found. What stood before us was the vast expanse of the dark ocean and its unfathomable depths from which the monster had earlier emerged. Clearly, there was no way out of this living hell. It was obvious that we had reached the end of the line.
I cursed the gods for my bad luck. I cried out in despair as I fell to my knees and pounded my fists at the cold, uncaring sand. We were doomed and it was only a matter of time before the creature reached us.
“Damn you all!” I shouted at the heavens. “Damn you!” I looked at the tired faces of my companions and realized that they had accepted our fate. Our legs were weary from running and for once I was certain that we would all end up dead.
As if on cue, the high-pitched scream again pierced the air. I didn’t turn back to see what it was. I merely knelt there in the sand waiting for the beast to snatch me. To my surprise, it wasn’t the monster. The scream was definitely human and it said the one thing I least expected: “Cut! Cut! Okay guys, it’s a wrap!”
I turned around and saw the full complement of a production crew in front of me. The beast was there too but now it was obvious that it wasn’t real. It was a machine operated by a special effects crew who were having a coffee break.
“What the hell?” I muttered in disbelief.
“Bobby, it’s all right,” the Hollywood celebrity approached me. “It’s okay. We’re part of a prank show and you played your part beautifully. For that, we will reward you handsomely.”
My legs were still shaking when I stood up. Everyone was smiling – the celebrity, Jane, Wally and even Gary whom I thought was missing. They clapped their hands in unison as I slowly approached them. I was taken for a ride and the show was over. All the fear that settled inside me was gone now. I looked at the ocean once more and saw a different picture this time – one of serenity and tranquility. Damn, I thought. “Wait till my mom hears about this,” I said to myself before joining the cast and crew for coffee.
