The Practice Of Santeria in Cuba

One of the things one would notice when visiting Cuba, especially in Havana, are the local people practicing a colorful form of religion they call Santeria. It is practically an amalgam of Yoruba religion (brought by African slaves to the Caribbean) with Native Indian traditions and Roman Catholics beliefs. Here religious customs were widely practiced including animal sacrifice, sacred drumming and communicating with the spirits of the dead and certain deities. Its origins has its origins in Cuba and other parts of the Caribbean. Their clergy involves priest and priestesses belonging to a house-tradition. Many followers are of African-Americans, black Hispanics and European-American heritage.
