Farewell To Cuba

By BobbyRica | February 1, 2012

As I leave Cuba, I depart with a sad heart. Cuba is like traveling in time and sidestepping to an alternate reality. You go to a place where everything seemed to have stopped and magically went another direction. That’s what drew me initially. Cuba, like most old cities, remains a vibrant place brimming with character, history and mystery.

But upon closer scrutiny, Cuba is a heady mix of flamboyant Hispanic, Caribbean, and African cultures marred by the severity of Communism. The years had markedly made the country unique from its Caribbean neighbors. That mixture alone is enough to lure me and keep me enthralled. Just a taste of their music, their cuisine, the general attitude of its people even down to a whiff of their handrolled cigars is like experiencing living for the first time. Cuba does that to you. Cuba to me is paradise: curious, organic, dangerous and exciting. It’s so easy to be smitten.

So as I move on to explore other countries, I will always have a fondness for Cuba. It had left an indelible mark. And as my plane swoops forward in the stratosphere, I raise my freshly made glass of mojito to Cuba while puffing a habanos.
