Children Sacrificed in the Andes

In 1992, a strange pile of wooden remnants were found near the icy summit of the Ampato (6288m). The discovery was made by a local climber, Miguel Zarate, who was guiding an expedition towards the mountain’s icy peak. A few years later, in 1995, Zarate urged – and convinced—Johan Reinhard, an American mountaineer and archaeologist, to climb the peak. At that time, the Ampato peak was coated with ash due to the recent eruptions of the nearby stratovolcano, Sabancaya. The snow had melted, which exposed the burial site more.
