He calls himself Franklyn de Nosara or just Frank. Nobody knows what real name is but who cares? He's a unique character. He may look like a cool local (with a machete) but he admits he's born and bred in Brooklyn. My friend Dave met him when he found himself walking the beaches of Nosara. Like most expats who have made Costa Rica their home, Frank was quite friendly and outgoing. He and Dave hit it off right away and had become good buddies.

This is why traveling to Costa Rica's northwestern province of Guanacaste is a necessity for all surfers. It is the most scarcely populated part of Costa Rica, so finding a solitary beach isn’t out of the question. This location also is home to some of the best surf schools and camps in the country, for those surfers just starting out.

Malpais is a surfing haven of sorts as it has two incredible surfing sites: Playa Carmen and Santa Teresa. Malpais is at the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula where the water is warm and the coastline is just superb. The location is mostly a relaxed surf town where you will meet agreeable people and an even amazing surf.

Matapalo in Osa Penninsula in one of the most beautiful untouched beaches of Costa Rica. As the scenery is incredible here, the surfing ain't bad either. The best time to visit and surf at Matapalo is from spring (April) to early fall (October). Matapalo is where you will find two point breaks where you can surf on waves that rise up to 200 meters! This happens when it fires on a south swell. The surf here is considered world class.

If there's one thing about Costa Rica that is more beautiful than the country itself, it has to be the women. Nothing can be more charming than a Ticowith lovely black eyes, long dark hair, and sun-kissed olive skin. Indeed, I find Costa Rican women very mesmerizing. I often admired them whenever I go on my Costa Rica adventures, whether in the city or country.

It is on the south of Tamarindo in Guanacaste. Avellandas doesn't have a village and yet there are some hotels and cabinas.
