Being a jinetera (slang for sex worker) is not so much a source of livelihood as it is a lifestyle.

While searching for seashells to complete my collection, I was caught up in a storm that strangely brought me to Cuba. Being an expert in 42 languages – 41 of which I invented – I was hoping to blend in with the natives and find my way around town. If you’re a girl riding a crowded camel bus on downtown Havana, you’d probably be wary of leering men in your vicinity because there’s a chance they’d be a bunch of JAMONEROS (ha-moh-neh-rows).
