If you decide to travel to the Honduran countryside, though, you will find primitive farmers that use 19th century tools to grow their crops. They work under bosses or "patrons." Honduran farmers operate the heavy machinery, but they do not have their own machinery to plant crops on their own plot of land. In fact, many Honduran farmers are so impoverished that they live off the land entirely, which is just a small piece of land allotted to them.

The "Mara" gang was actually a Salvadoran invention. This is because many illegal El Salvador immigrants travelled to the U.S. when the U.S.-backed “death squads” ravaged the country in the 1980's. This was when the "Mara Salvatrucha" came out. The Maras gangs were created by Salvadorans to protect themselves from Mexican (Mexican Los Angelinos) and African American bullies – in the 1980's, these groups have very huge populations in Los Angeles.

It is true that there are parts in Honduras that are dangerous. This was not always so, though. According to good Honduran friend (who's now an American citizen) that in the 1970's and 80's, Honduras was pretty okay. But the tightening of the U.S.-Mexico Border in the mid 1990's (which coincided with the recapturing of the congress by the Republicans) led to the deportation of Hondurans who were illegally residing in the United States.
